About Frank Remar
Frank’s involvement in fine art photography has been an evolutionary process over the last thirty-five years. Using his first SLR camera to capture primarily landscape images of his family’s visits to national parks and other travels throughout the United States, his output was limited to the postcard size images available from commercial film processors. Admiring the large format work of other photographic artists available in the local galleries where they travelled, he would invariably purchase some of their work. “In my mind, it just took a really large image to do justice to the beauty, grandeur, and detail of what I saw.”
His wife, Sheryl, helped him realize the possibilities of what he could do with his own work seventeen years ago when, as a surprise Christmas gift, she had some telephoto shots of glacial ice formations that Frank took in Alaska enlarged and framed. Spending most of his time on his day job as chief financial officer of Dillon Companies, Inc and shooting on film without his own darkroom, however, his volume of output remained very limited.
Converting from film to digital roughly eight years ago allowed Frank to combine his passion for photography with his interest and acumen in technology. The ability to have much greater control and flexibility in the entire process of composition, capture, and output came at the perfect time as he was moving into retirement and now had more time to devote to what had previously been a somewhat limited hobby. His first digital photo printer allowed him to create images up to 13 x 19 inches in size. Always wanting to create larger images, he purchased a large format pigment-based ink printer four years ago. This allows him to create images up to 44 inches wide and virtually any length and print on a variety of fine art media, including canvas.
“There is so much beauty in the world created by both God and man. It gives me a great deal of satisfaction to capture and reproduce some degree of that beauty for myself and others to enjoy beyond the instant when you spot and take in that beauty.”
